The debate about gear rages on

Very true...Quite a lot of accounts of old people in communities in Tuson Az or similar spots, fall on pavement, and get such large area 3rd degree burns in just the few minutes before they can be picked up...They burn kills them.

The fry an egg on the sidewalk stories have an actual basis.

You are absolutely correct, Lou.
Florence, AZ. 116 degrees out:

So yeah. As an FYI, when the temps are around 110 degrees, the ambient temperature a couple feet above the blacktop is around 150 degrees... I think it's Alanrider7 who has a picture of the temperature he took above the track... keep in mind, as hot as the white sidewalk was in that video, the asphalt temperature will be higher.

I assumed it was a troll thread from page one. I assume anybody who makes a thread with the purpose of debating about gear is trolling, especially debating against it.

You're an idiot. There is no trolling here. Just an honestly good debate going on. I rather enjoy the back and forth and evolution of the conversation.

Agree with my viewpoint or not, I appreciate the debate itself, as well as others participation.

Breaking Daniel - I will ask you this one question.

Knowing you are prior military and spent time on patrol in the middle east. Would you ever go into a potentially hostile situation without wearing your gear due to being hot or uncomfortable? I think not.

Every time you put your leg over your seat you are heading directly into a potential hostile situation. Those Prius are just as dangerous as an IED :)

Then you think wrong. There were PLENTY of times we stripped off helmets, side protectors, gloves, and other protective gear to benefit the mission we were tasked with. We geared according the need of the situation.

You're the one on the wrong side of logic.:|

Yes, this can and may result in suspension vote. I don't care what someone else says to prompt this response--keep it respectful please.

:thumbup There is quite a collection of very experienced and savvy BARF riders on this thread, trying to tell him, the truth...
and it is not getting through to him....Has an un-real aspect to it...:rolleyes

And other experienced and savvy BARF riders on this thread trying to tell you otherwise.

Perhaps we are to a point of misunderstanding each other. What exactly is it that you want from me and others like me? I may be wrong, but it seems like there is a large contingent of people that would like to see everyone ATGATT for several reasons (insurance costs rising, safety, etc...) Is that true? Is that what you want?

Basically, all I want is for people to understand that ATGATT is not crash PREVENTION, it is injury mitigation. My intention to have everyone understand that actually aids you in your intention (if your intention is indeed to address insurance costs, safety, etc...). If people are better educated as to what gear actually does, then they will apply it more appropriately. Understanding risks and benefits is key to making wise decisions, and may aid some in the decision to gear up. What I don't want is some NOOB rider having the impression that if he goes out and buys the coolest looking set of leathers, he will now suddenly be more resistant to the actual crash itself. I would prefer, honestly, that he receive proper training for how to ride. Training and education are the best things a new rider can do for himself. If he chooses to also gear up, as I did when I first started riding, then I commend him for that decision. But for Gods sake, stop preaching that ATGATT is the end all solution to crash prevention. I still cant believe that louemc feels that it is always a riders fault for "allowing" a car to hit them. I saw in another thread a post from someone (Gixxergirl1000 possibly?) that said they had lost a good friend to a crash where a driver hit them, even though he was an extremely experienced rider. Hell, I have lost friends (literally picked up their severed body parts) who crashed because a car hit him. Wasn't his fault that while going around a blind sweeper doing the speed limit an SUV decided to hit him head on, and he had railings preventing him getting out of the way. All happened in the blink of an eye. But louemc seems to think it's his fault.

Is that what all of this is about?

Who is saying that wearing some leather will make you fall off your bike less?

No You are not 0% fault, in that story...You are 100% at fault Dumbass, in that story...You let a car hit you.

The rest of it doesn't matter to me...The rest of it wouldn't exist, either...Except for the One important thing...You let a car hit you.

DucatiHoney. For clarification purposes, I have to ask. Is "idiot" an unacceptable term to call someone, but "dumbass" is? see above quote

If so, I will retract my previous statement where i called him an "idiot" and change it to "dumbass".

Also, "idiot" is indeed a defined word in the Merriam-Webster dictionary, and is defined as "a foolish or stupid person".

"Dumbass" is not in the dictionary.

Either way, I'll try and keep it respectful. I just ask that everyone else try too, even if they disagree with me.

I really want to tell this to someone in a position of power at my work. Do you think it will go over well?

See my post about how someone called me a dumbass. Why didn't you post the exact same comment about them as you have just done for me? Because you probably disagree with me regarding the gear discussion.

Try and be more objective please.

See my post about how someone called me a dumbass.

He's been getting away with that for years Daniel...and I predict he will be allowed to continue.

You on the other hand? :|

Note to barf newb: They totally ignore whatever insults/baiting Lou does. And he does it constantly.

And there are plenty of us who get your point. You're wasting your breath from here on out man! :thumbup

I guess your both right. Perhaps enough is enough. Maybe I'll just leave this one alone from now on before they really do start declaring "off with his head!"

What a novel idea, wished I would've thought of that! :teeth

Please do not delete portions of the quote as to the point that it warps the context of what I said. My statement that you quoted was in reference to how we actually removed protective gear.

Otherwise you are no better than the mainstream media.

My full quote:
"Then you think wrong. There were PLENTY of times we stripped off helmets, side protectors, gloves, and other protective gear to benefit the mission we were tasked with. We geared according the need of the situation [while serving in Iraq]."

What you quoted:
"We geared according the need of the situation."

You're allowed to debate the merit of gear all you want, but don't split hairs with me over the TOS here--at least not publicly. It's unlikely to work out in your favor. We have PM's and this would be a good time to use them.

That said, do what you like with the post revision to any moniker you choose and see where the chips fall. I'm a moderator, not your mother.

You sound intelligent enough to understand "respectful" without resorting to being a tattle-tale. If you feel someone's post is over-the-line then report it please.
