The NHL Thread, 2012/2013 season

Agreed, something about that series was too convenient..

Think back to when the Sharks won the presidents cup then lost in the first round. Weird.

But the NHL Playoffs are like that. I have observed them for a few years now and my observation is that you need several factors to fall in line:

1. You need your core team to be 100% healthy after the all-star break.
2. You need to be a "winning" team about 2-3 weeks leading up to the playoffs.
3. You need to be lucky.

If you have a healthy team, start winning to get momentum, then have a little luck, you will go far, REAL far! Look at the Kings last year. Had the Sharks beat them in that last regular season game, they wouldn't have even made the playoffs. Crazy, huh?

Holy shit boston bruins. If i had a vagina i would straight up shocker myself.
Go bruins. Go sharks. Go effin rangers for that matter. Wooot.

WOW. I mean WOWOW. I can't believe Toronto shit the bed so hard. Or maybe since it's Toronto, it's completely believable :laughing but seriously, holy shit son

Bruins vs Rangers should be pretty entertaining. Some big hitters on both sides

Sharks vs Kings should be a good series. Pretty damn nervous.

hate to say it, but someone needs to run quick hard and rattle his cage early...i like sharks chances tho. can never discount momentum.

unbelievable finish to the bruins game. at the end of the 2nd, it looked...not just over, but over-over. kinda like the rangers game...

ovi played hard games 6 and 7 but was out of position a lot. looking back, he seemed like he was playing as a petulant child, pissed off at the system he's in and the lot he was given with the team he has. he was disappointing, and his teammates were moreso. ribiero: surprisingly horrid.

Sharks in 5, granted they play similar to how they did in round one.

If they slack off a little given time off and takes them some time to get back into it, I say 6 games.

The chemistry between the lines is great. The team as a whole look great. There isn't much to complain about (obviously). We shall see how this series goes, I see the Kings taking runs at the Sharks to try to wear them down and make them tired which hopefully results in teammates standing up for themselves or others if needed. When I see a player step up for another teammate who obviously is not the fighting type shows that chemistry I was talking about.

I have high hopes for the Sharks, as do I every year. As I always say "this is their year". Given that they didn't kick ass in the regular season and had their issues until the trades hopefully this gives a extra bump.

Quick, ugh.

that rat bastard!

fortunately I really believe San Jose has another level to their game that they didn't achieve last night. It looked a lot like LA was trying to slow down SJ's attack, putting more defenders high up in the neutral zone and making the Sharks skate around them. Seemed to work, as SJ looked slower than they have in about a month.

there was about 20 minutes of that game where SJ couldn't make a pass and LA took full advantage. those long shots from the point are dangerous in the playoffs, eh? slight deflection on the 2nd goal which gave LA a nice cushion.

Quick was very good but his defense was what saved the day. against VAN, that puck would sit 3 feet in front of the goalie and pinball around until SJ found it and buried it. Quick seems much more willing to reach out and dive for a puck sitting outside the crease and try to cover it. And his defense swept away many 2nd chance opportunities. They also started fronting Pavelski, which took away the few chances he had to get off a quick deflection towards the net. they are quite good at deflecting the puck out of play.

alright, game 1 to LA. kudos to them. I think the Sharks have more to show.

one last thought: the charging call Torres got was total BS. shoulder to shoulder. oh well.

Oh boy. Thought the charging call was BS, flying in to NY for a suspension talk, even bigger BS. Total reputation call. :bs
I knew it was coming. Dumb announcers didn't help the cause announcing to the freaking nation how it looked like a head hit and bringing up the past about Raffi's hitting.

Funny how fast things change. Sharks fans hated this guy and now all I want to do is defend and support him. :laughing

Well, it wasjust a weak call. Sharks fan or not. I think he hit himand gave him whiplash from what i saw.

Stopped skating well before the hit, kept his elbows down and skates stayed on the ice...def a rep call... I cant believe im defending torres either..

Here is the underlying issue; Torres comes with a "Repeat Offender" enhancement, thus it would seem that ANY questionable hit will come under severe scrutiny.

I didn't think I'd be defending Raffi, but I think this is a total reputation call.

Wasn't even charging, elbows down, and didn't jump. Stoll had his head down looking for the puck, last minute sees Raffi, tries to slow down/brace for the hit, raises his body a little, and gets nailed (in the shoulder, possibly the head. kind of hard to tell with the shitty replays we're given).

Hopefully Stoll is okay. Sounds like he took a beating on that and won't be playing in Game 2.

Hopefully Raffi isn't suspended. Without him and Havlat, we're back to a two-line team.

Personally I also believe the Torres hit on Stoll was completely legal, hard check, but legal non-the-less. I get the feeling the league will spin the "defenseless player" perspective, which appeared be the case, but isn't cause for suspension.

Torres will already be "suspended" 1 game, tonight, as I doubt he'll be back from NYC in time for puck drop. Correct me if I'm wrong as I don't have confirmation, this is merely a hunch.

I have a feeling that's their spin too, but at what point do you keep the recipient responsible for their actions. As Thornton referred to, keep your head up son!

I doubt Raffi is making it back in time. No news if he's suspended yet, and unless he's already on the plane, I don't think he's going to make it in time for the game.

Will be interesting to see how we juggle our lines.
