The Official 2012 NFL Thread

it's like a USC reunion up in here.

:laughing

Just watched the Gruden QB Camp thing with new Fins' QB Ryan Tannehill. This might be the first time in NFL history that the incoming rookie QB right out of college knows the team's NFL offense MUCH better than the established vet QB's. :thumbup

This Osi Umenyiora thing is getting ugly. Dude is 30 yrs old, making decent money but definitely is underpaid based on production and deserves a fat contract extension. Simply put, he is a beast. Teams need a beast.

Reminds me of LB Cameron Wake for Miami, also 30 yrs old.

Osi: 9 sacks in 2011 (missed 7 games due to injury and still kicked ass!), 11.5 sacks in 2010 (21.5 total past 2 yrs)
Wake: 8.5 sacks in 2011, 14.0 sacks in 2010 (22.5 total past 2 yrs)

Osi made $3,125,000 base salary in 2011, while Wake made $480,000 in 2011. Combine them you get 44 sacks for only $3.5 mil base over 2 yrs. Peanuts.

These two guys have both been dominant but been so underpaid compared to the rest of the NFL it's silly.

Pay the men!

I disagree. I think Osi is an above average talent that excels in one aspect of his game. Wake however, is an every down player that teams must respect greatly on every situational down. Too bad he is stuck on the worst franchise in the NFL. He has a very promising future.

I disagree with your disagree. The Fins were division champs a few years ago before the Pats/Jets reality beckoned, and Chad Pennington's shoulder disintegrated (again). Lots of NFL teams can only wish they were that good....playing the Pats and Jets twice a year kinda sucks. :laughing

I dislike the Fins' owner though. Trying to hire new coaches like Harbaugh without firing the coach he already had was a pathetic, no-class move. So disrespectful.

Wake sucked in coverage his first NFL year but has gotten a ton better. What a great team player.

Let me explain the New York Football Giants to you. Firstly, A deal is a deal, we don't negotiate. You contract with us, you play it out. Period. Secondly, you get a fair going rate. We don't pay extra-extra for play makers. If your ego is attached to your contract size, you WILL find another team. We're comfortable with that. We designed how most of the structure on how the Draft and Contract infrastructure works in the NFL and will put complete faith in the system because it is in part the legacy of our franchise. Have a nice career, we'll continue to win Championships with draft builds and other peoples scraps. If you want to win some Championships on a team that has no room for Super Stars even amongst its Captains, do let us know.

It can be a very frustrating way of managing the team when we're not playing well and you want the guys to splurge on some, "win now," talent, but it allows a certain high and mighty self righteousness when we do play well. I expect Osi will be gone after this season, but I'm wondering about his ability to stay healthy as he gets older anyway. I suspect we'll take another champ DE in the 1st round next year, Start JPP and Tuck while rotating in the rookie and letting Osi sign to a team that doesn't mind paying top dollar for him.

He had as many sacks as Haynesworth last year.

@AdamSchefter

Scott Fujita suspended three games, Anthony Hargrove suspended eight games, Will Smith suspended four games, Jonathan Vilma suspended 1year.

Damn.

That's so cool, he made it to the pros after all.

Miami Dolphins lost a member of their perfect '72 team last year to cancer, he covered the team as broadcaster after his football career too.

They invited his son to camp and gave him his dad's old number, nice.

Son of Jim 'Mad Dog' Mandich gets tryout with the Miami Dolphins

Nick Mandich sat in his family's dining room where some old images began to speak.

One was an impressive picture autographed by the 1972 Super Bowl champion Miami Dolphins, the only undefeated team in NFL history.

Most capture moments from the life of Jim Mandich - a South Florida sports icon, who played for the Dolphins from 1970-77 before becoming a broadcaster and the team's color commentator for 27 years.

One can only wonder how an image of a proud father-and-son standing at a Dolphins' practice would have looked among the collection of momentos.

Now a year after "Mad Dog" succumbed to a lengthy battle with bile-duct cancer, the youngest of his three son's will tryout for the NFL franchise that at times felt more like family.

"He basically gave his life and soul to the Dolphins," Nick Mandich said Monday. "That was something he wore with pride."

Nick now has an opportunity in the NFL, and he intends not to waste the opening. The 6-foot-4, 255 pound tight end recently graduated from Southern Connecticut State University where he wore No. 80 for the Owls. He played three seasons totaling 37 catches, 303 yards and four touchdowns for his career.

Jim Mandich also played tight end, first starring at Michigan and then for the Dolphins. In 119 NFL games, which includes one season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, he had 121 receptions for 1,406 yards and 23 touchdowns, earning two Super Bowl rings.

Nick said his father never pressured him to play football, but after basically being raised by the Dolphins it was an inevitable path he hopes can lead to a profession.

"All I can say is that I'm not sure where it will go from here," Nick's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told The Joe Rose Show. "But it is a great opportunity for Nick and it is the fulfillment of a dream for a guy to get a chance to go to an NFL minicamp and actually put on the Miami Dolphins uniform."

Nick began training for this chance after college at Bommarito Performance Systems followed by pro-day workouts at the University of Miami, and at the Dolphins' training facility in Davie.

The Dolphins provided him with a red No. 88 jersey, a moment not lost on the 24-year-old still coping with his father's death.

"I've got my father's number," Nick remembered holding the jersey in his hands. "At first I felt a little nervous to put it on, but as the workout went on I was very comfortable. I was told I did a very good job. At the end I was proud of myself, and even more proud I had that number on."

Nick said he received calls from other teams, but the Dolphins have offered the opportunity.

"It means everything in the world to me," Nick said of the tryout. "I feel very fortunate that the Dolphins are giving me such a great opportunity to prove myself. It means the world to my family. I'm very thankful. ...I don't want to take any handouts. I want to earn everything by hard work and determination."

Ireland is trying to piece together a roster that will help the Dolphins continue building on its 6-3 finish in 2011. His focus is on identifying prospects to help Miami recapture a once sterling image disrupted in recent months by unpopular decisions.

"Nick attended the Miami workout day we had at our facility recently and we were impressed with his skills," Ireland said in an email. "He certainly showed enough talent to merit an invitation to our rookie mini-camp as a non-contract tryout player, where we will be able to get a better look at him. Nick earned that invitation strictly by his football ability, but we certainly know what his father meant to this franchise. It will be wonderful to see a Mandich on a Miami Dolphin practice field again."

:wow
