The Official 2016/2017 NFL Thread

Which is exactly why you never hear shit about Harbaugh.

Just the fact that Wolf is interviewing is a good sign.

Front office types are allowed to deny requests, no big deal -- like Ballard from KC did. It's not like coaches where if you're being offered a job that's a promotion the team HAS to let you go interview.

There are lots of ways a person can act like a total prick.
Unfortunately Harbs exhibits two or three on a constant basis.

It's the way York the Dork treats personnel that to me, would discourage anybody from wanting to work for him. That way Harbaugh was slo-mo'ed out of a job was excruciating. No doubt he was hard to work for, but man, what a way to fire someobdy. Kelly had to "make a phone call" the night before the game to be told "we'll see."

It was like not firing the waitress until after her last tip so she doesn't spit in somebody's soup. But it's football. And millions of dollars. And grown men.

yep.

and also, what's with all the leaked info from the 9ers?? it's like, everything that's going to happen somehow gets leaked to the press 12 hours before, then there's some denial, then it happens. what kind of backstabbing culture is there in santa clara these days?

That's the part Harbaugh didn't understand either.

He's perfect for college. He can chew through 18 year olds for a couple years, then they are gone and he's got a new crop of recruits to repeat with. He's also got complete control and doesn't have to answer to anybody.

There are VERY few coaches in the NFL who can handle that and be successful.

owners have fuckups.

People thing Jerry Jones is good now, after royally fucking up by making himself GM.

The best think York can do is hire people and stay out of the way. You can make a case that he did that after Harbaugh was gone, and he gave Baalke a 6 year long leash and then waited a year too long to fire him.

Amazing how much winning solves.

Dear God, who outside of the greater Dallas metro area thinks Jerry Jones is anything other than a slimy used car salesman?

Former Arkansas college player, co-captain player on a national NCAA champion team, multiple Super Bowl titles, #1 NFC seed in 2017 playoffs....would you take worthless putz "his only qualification is he was born into a wealthy family" Jed York over this? :laughing

Oh dear god no, I'm just saying, he isn't a Kraft, Rooney or Mara. He isn't even a Khan. I think most people see his cheesey salesman smile and roll their eyes before he even starts talking. LOL, maybe that is just an NFC East thing though. The only thing that can unite 90 years of hate between the Eagles, Giants and Redskins is FUCK THOSE DIRTBAG NEW GUY HILLBILLIES.

Nope.

I'm a Harbs fanboi and even I sense interacting with the man is a trying experience. I imagine meeting him is like crashing your bike while dressed in shorts and flip flops if he doesn't find you "worthy." And dealing with him afterwards is like having someone rub rock salt into all the road rash. We're talking a firm, deep tissue massage of rock salt not some mamby-pamby light petting.

My thinking is driven by results, not possibilities, so I would have found a way to make things work with him simply because he is a winner. He finds ways to get shit done where others have failed. To me that's worth giving him a long lead. If he ends up hanging himself with that extra rope without any help from me then so be it. I'm not the CEO/President of an NFL team that was essentially dropped into my lap because I happen to be the scion of a wealthy family though. I have a very clear vision of the landscape that exists beyond what a 1%-er experiences.

As for leaking to the press it's a form of transparency. Albeit one-sided. It's a tool. Has Jeddy-bear used it poorly in the past? Yes. A couple of things will determine if the 9ers will get back on track under his leadership: is Jeddy-bear smart enough to learn from his mistakes and does he have the stones to work through the frustration of failure to turn it into success?

To a point.

I couldn't care less about Jed, but when Harbaugh tried to kick him out of a meeting and said it was for men only, that's a fireable offense right there. I don't care how much of an asshole you are, that kind of insubordination is WAY over the line.

Couple that with the players saying he tried to get them to play through concussions and various other injuries, and there was very clearly more than just him and Baalke not getting along.

Plus, yet another reminder that they DID offer him an extension and he turned it down because he wanted to be the highest paid HC in the league and he wanted more control over the roster.

Like I have said, this is why he's perfect for college. Doesnt have to answer to anybody, can treat players like shit because they'll be gone in a few seasons, etc.

The Niners were a garbage team before him. They are a garbage team after he left. Dude may be a headcase, but still, the results. :dunno

Honestly, I think if the Niners wanted results, they should talk to Mean Grandpa. He has experience with building up a floundering franchise, as both an expansion team and an experienced team underperforming, with success in both. His style is one of hard nosed discipline, much like Harbaugh, but without all the ego bullshit attached to it. He probably has 3-5 years of coaching left in him, which would allow him enough time to develop the team into a Championship caliber outfit again before retiring.

Once the team is a winner again with some decent talent, let the HC retire in peace and THEN bring in some kind of young hotshot coach to pump up the volume.

The decline started before he left. People ignore that. He dropped all the way to 8-8 his last season because he was already having problems.

I heard rumors of Coughlin to Jags. That wouldn't be a bad spot for him, if he even wants to go back.

I'm hoping SF goes with Wolf or Riddick (the ESPN dude) and then McDaniels -- or potentially BOB if he leaves Houston like its been rumored.

I just heard they're interviewing Tom Cable though, which would be underwhelming as fuck.

that's interesting. Underwhelming, sure. But he did get the massively-dysfunctional Raiders to play as a team and get to 8-8, which was a feat unto itself.

Plus, he'd be really, really cheap. With, what, $60M promised to coaches/GM not on the team anymore, It may be prudent to go with a more economical approach.

I get that his demeanor was a considerable factor in his firing. The point I'm making is that if I, a 99%-er, somehow found myself risen to the position of NFL owner my perspective regarding Harb's behavior would have been more lenient or at minimum functionally/results directed. I doubt Jeddy-bear had ever encountered an employee who treated him so harshly. I doubt he was even able to process it in a positive way at the time, hence the firing.

Harbs is an old school coach. I don't agree with much of his approach. His encouraging players to work through injuries can't be faulted. It's their job. It's his job to get them to play. Bringing up concussions is a bit meaningless because football is an impact sport. Concussions are inevitable. AFAIC the NFL's attempt to frame the case that football can be played safely is preposterous.

His contract extension was offered in one hand while the FO was working to push him out the door with the other. Again, much of this was his own fault.

I can guarantee that he would still be an excellent NFL coach as he's already proven to be so. He would require an FO that he respects going into it though. Either that or the owner would need to be someone completely disengaged from the day-to-day operations of the franchise in which case he would probably show respect for the simple understanding exhibited by the owner that they don't really understand the full extent of vertical variables involved in an NFL franchise.

The fights in the coaches meetings would be entertaining enough for PPV.

:laughing

Cable's had a good run in Seattle, but that O-line he's in charge of hasn't been up to their usual standards the way Wilson was thumped around for most of this season.
