The sailing nerd-out thread

Ben, I k3ep missing you. Was down on Sugardock last week.
Your dog has an uncanny resemblance to the Bossdog.

I miss sailing.

I missed you but I got to see Bossdog the other day running around the salvage operation. Made me miss Osa even more, we are hoping to get her out here soon.

We have been waiting on the salvage to get our new boat hauled at Sugardock so we can start working on the rebuild.

You're welcome to borrow him anytime.
I miss sailing, it's the one thing that can provide blind terror and absolute contentment all on the same day :laughing

At Willow Springs I used to hold the throttle wide open from T5 until T9 turn in point, but the idea of being in a little boat in a a gale makes my stomach go cold as ice<shudder>

Tip o the hat to you guys...

Motorcycles fill that void for me nicely, from time to time. :)

Our Corsair F-28CC on Lake Tahoe (with my Lake Tahoe spinnaker). Was a great boat for Tahoe as it would sail easily in a puff and really get up and haul in the afternoon Zephyrs. Top speed across Meeks Bay was 24.9 Knots with the main hull in the air...weeeee! :party

RIP Captain Creamer/Globe Star

Professor Creamer, who died at the age of 104 on Wednesday, taught geography for many years at Glassboro State College, now Rowan University, in Glassboro, N.J.

His expertise helped him become a history-making mariner, the first recorded person to sail round the world without navigational instruments.

His 30,000-mile odyssey, in a 36-foot cutter with a small crew, made headlines worldwide on its completion in 1984 ...

... It is daunting enough to circumnavigate the Earth with the aid of modern global positioning technology, much less with medieval and Renaissance tools like a mariner’s compass and sextant.

But Professor Creamer, in the grip of an obsession that had held him for years, shunned even those newfangled contrivances, as well as a radio, a clock and a wristwatch.

He chose instead to rely on his deep knowledge of the planet and its vagaries, and be guided by nothing more than wind, waves, the sun by day, and the moon and stars by night.

:rose

(god bless Captain Creamer, and New Jersey, too ...)

I tried a FJs, but it seemed like a pig on a low wind day.

Got rid of mine. Mac 26S. Was an easy boat to own because of the water ballast, but it needed weight in the board. It was a good lake sailor. Our lakes here in SoCal pretty much suck. I took it to Ana Capa and Santa Cruz a few times and that was a challenge. You had to time leaving Ventura perfectly otherwise the Sun Downers would kick your ass.

Good bump. I'm sitting on my powerboat in Emerald Bay at the boat in camping area as I write this, daydreaming i had a 36' sailboat to cruise the lake on and gunkhole camp.
Pic from last night when the Loyalton fire smoke.took over the lake for a couple of hours.

Were you there over the weekend? I swear you could surf the inlet on the weekend with all bozos.

I was there (Emerald Bay to Tahoe City) last weekend and was horrified with the amount of people

My girlfriend and I spent the last five years cruising this sweetie of a boat, now sold to a good home but we miss her. She is built of Ferro-cement and has no engine.

Now I work as a yacht surveyor so I still get to be around boats all day, but we are hoping we can get our new boat re-built and leave again in about 5 years. Only been 6 months and we already are starting to miss cruising.

For some strange reason we like sailing in cold places...

you mentioned in another thread that you were getting back out there! Good for you you crusty old sailor! what you going out in, and where you going?

Re: tahoe/emerald bay

I wouldn't venture to EB on a weekend unless I had to, we are here mon to thurs.

And yes Bozos galore, people start surfing/wakeboarding just outside the bouys when leaving, so you have idiots in the water with a flag up RIGHT THERE in the channel.

And then you had the idiots from 8pm till dark when the bay was empty making surfing laps in the bay (you know, that no wake zone of the entire bay) music blasting, yelling, people on the shore yelling and cursing at them that it was a no wake zone every time they fell and stopped, which was often.

Good times.

Thanks for the post, John. This guy was amazing. The NYT had a good obit/article on him today.

Thanks for the bump, too. I totally missed this thread in 2016!

I got dragged onto a sailboat against my will back in late 2012. After the race the owner of the boat asked me if I remembered where we were docked. I said "Of course." He said "Great!" then handed me the wheel and wandered off. I've been crewing on that very same boat ever since that day, and have hardly missed any races until this year when everything went to hell. I'm pretty sure that boat got sold this past weekend and our new-to-us boat is on it's way here from Port Townsend as I type. If I weren't being so hyper-careful with this Covid thing pre-transplant I'd be sailing her back myself. Hoping to watch her sail under the gate this week. This will be the one that takes us to Hawaii - PacCup 2022 or bust! :party

Yep, just about to start building out a 33' Aluminum boat from a bare hull to be our new cruising boat. Got a couple years of work ahead of us to get it done.

Initial plan is truck the boat to Duluth and sail out the great lakes to the East Coast, then probably back to high latitudes. Would like to visit Iceland/Greenland/northern Europe.

my BIL is a hardcore sailor (lives on his boat and is part of the management team at a local marina). he has done the PacCup twice. the first time as navigator, the second as captain (both as hired crew on someone else’s boat). after another race he was also hired to fly over to hawaii and sail a boat back. he’s never done it on his own boat, but keeps threatening to. he also keeps threatening to set sail and disappear lol.
