The sailing nerd-out thread

So, yeah, the shelter in place has put the idea back in my head to sell my condo and buy a sailboat to fart around the Pacific in my retirement. I’m just a few years away from paying off my place. Once that happens, things get to be a bit more real. I’m going to spend the next few years patiently shopping for the perfect boat. :thumbup

I’m kinda settled on the idea of wanting a ketch rig and furling masts to make things easier for my solo butt to handle everything from the cockpit. At the very least, it is nice to have something to dream about again. It’s been a while.

PacCup 2022 or bust! :party

That fateful first day, September 5th, 2012...

PacCup 2022 sounds awesome, good luck! :gsxrgrl

Preparation for the PacCup sailboat race:

Getting ready for the race is an effort of several months at a minimum. Typical preparation budgets, from entry fee to post-arrival rum, run from 20 to 60 thousand dollars and up.

With on-water times from five to seventeen days, twenty-four hours a day, this is the equivalent of running a hundred round-the-buoys races back to back. Reliability, flexibility, and spare parts are the keys to a successful preparation.

think this year is also a Vendee Globe year, god willing:

Vendée Globe
Dates: the start of the race – on November 8, 2020
Venue: around the world

The only solo sailing race around the world that also non-stop and without assistance. Competitors will raise their sails in November, 2020, in the recognized mecca of the world sailing, the city of Les Sables d’Olonne.

enjoyed the boat building links, too ... :ride

i love the idea of sailing everywhere, but i'll never do it.

so, i pacify my laziness by WATCHING other people building sweet wooden boats.

both projects are pretty amazing, and evidently there are a LOT more boat builds on youtube but those 2 have kept me enthralled

I spent a winter working for Harold Burnham building the schooner Isabella, learned a lot that year.

I've got 500 hours as crew on the Schooner Alma. Mostly second mate but spent a summer as first mate.

Never did any big ocean sailing. Spent a week gunkholing in the USVI and BVI and sailed my small boats all over SF Bay for many years.

I also grew up sailing. My cousin started me on a Banshee. Got the worst sunburn ever. He was the Venture 24 Regional Champion. I crewed for him a couple times. He was sort of like Captain Bligh. My first boat was an El Toro. Then got into Sunfish. I used to only take that thing out on Small Craft Advisory Days. Big fun surfing that thing. Eventually I bent the mast. We rented a Laser in Kona and had a magical afternoon sailing along as Flying Fish jumped over the boat.

I've been watching both of those channels for a while now. I also watch Mads over at Sail Life. He's rebuilding a Warrior. It's turning out amazing! Be careful though. His rabbit hole is really deep.

Alma is a cool boat, and saying she sails like a barge isn't an insult!

I watch Project Binky.
I went to SF when the Aussie 18s were in town. Completely crazy. Never seen a monohull pitchpole before.
I would really like to try out the 49er Class. Those boats look like over powered surfboards with ladder racks.

I did time on 505s then the 49er class hit. Talk about fully acrobatic. :etf

Trying to dog up pics of my stunningly beautiful IOR 2 Tonner Bohemia.

spent a lot of time on this barge.

I work as a shipwright in Port Townsend and am currently restoring this Tumlaren on my own time. It was built for the prince of Denmark in 1947 then found it's way into BC and eventually the backyard of a man who lives on Marrowstone Island. After sitting out of the water for 16 years I got my hands on it in April and have it almost ready to sail. Currently rigging it and building a carbon motor mount.

Can anyone confirm what the taxes are on a sailboat in California? I’m reading 10% sales tax and 1% annual luxury tax. Is this true, or is my google-fu failing me?

And, how is the assessment value for the luxury tax calculated?

2021 America's Cup will begin on:
Saturday, March 6
and ends on
Sunday, March 21

“The AC75 (America's Cup 75 class) is a 75ft foiling monohull sailboat class, governing the construction and operation of the yachts to be used in the 2021 America's Cup.”

liking the monohull compared to the AC50 used in 2017 ... :dunno
