VW "Clean" Diesel not really clean

So I was in the replacement for the Jetta TDI and some asshole with a huge Dodge Ram tries to "race me" on the freeway on ramp in the rain. :p From my rear view mirror, I saw his traction control kick in, :p Dicknob tried to pass me on the outside line. :p

I think the perception is that small girly white cars (not unlike some's Jettas) are slow . :dunno

Another perception must be is that big trucks are faster and badasser in the rain. I think so yes? :dunno

Looking at a used '15 BMW 328 diesel wagon with 19k miles. Seller wants a lease take over but I don't want to throw a years worth of $475 a month away. Gonna see what it would cost to turn it into a finance deal, if possible.

Mulling the idea of taking over a lease in a Nissan Leaf for a year. Be cheap as hell to drive but would be limited on what I can carry. Trips would be in the GF's leased Audi A4.

Spend a bit more and get a Volt. I was thinking pure EV but Berto (Holeshot) talked some sense into me.

2013 Volt with car pool stickers are going for $13k on Craigs, fully loaded.

Agree. They're a few less wholesale. I love my Volt.

Whatever you do, DON'T get the Leaf.

THIS! Alex has some funny stories on people freaking out about battery usage when waiting for accidents to clear, etc.

It only takes one cold day and an unexpected detour to near shit your pants about range in a Leaf. Plus, everyone has figured this out and steers well clear of them. No way, no how.

Oh and the biggest difference: CA law grants hybrids 10 years/ 150K mile warranties on the hybrid system of vehicles. "hybrid system" is very loose and may include the MFD inside, etc. Pure electrics do not have this warranty provision.

Plus in a Volt you don't have to worry about how fast the battery drains when you are doing 80 with the heat on full. The gas engine just kicks in when you run out.

I am far from the most economically minded Volt driver and even I have gone almost a year and about 13k miles only buying gas 7 times (@ $20 a tank each time).

Also if someone these days is going to cut you off into the car pool lane and throw out the boat anchor, blocking your speed run, it is going to be a Leaf driver. :twofinger

:laughing yes, most people should stay away from the leaf. it involves an elementary-school level of planning for your day. I doubt many people can handle that, haha.

This makes me want one...except I ride a bike everywhere. Maybe one for the wife.

I fully can't...

Actually, I plan the shit out of things in the Volt to try and get all-battery to places and back. The temperature tends to change things, but worse: I want heat like Fred!

No Prius?

How does a Volt get the green hov stickers and the Prius doesn't?

My neighbor just got a new volt, I'll have to go chat with her
Bout it.

The original Prius yellow stickers have all expired.

CA had 'green' stickers for plug in cars (the Prius plug in still qualifies for this)

But yeah, no more stickers for run of the mill non plug in hybrids.

The plug in cars, can do pure electric (usually a short range--our volvo gets like 18)

Interesting. I have a 7 mile commute 1 way and can charge for free at work. I'm really debating it as a 3rd car.

I have a 56 mile round trip commute. Sometimes I charge at work but it is urban warfare getting a charger around this office. :laughing

If I had a 7 mile commute, I would never charge at home. When weather is warm I can go from 92/880 all the way to 237/101 and back to about Newpark on a single charge. (If I am driving in regular traffic, not doing 75-80 on half empty freeways)

Would strongly, strongly, strongly recommend the Volt over the Leaf. Had a coworker who said he hasn't filled his gas tank in over a year aside from just draining it for fresh fuel (siphons it out regularly and puts it in his other car). That part seemed a bit excessive to me but I guess if you're never dipping into it then it's good to refresh periodically.

Massive range advantage for longer trips too, plus there's some videos floating around with surprisingly good snow performance even on hills.

Draining the tank is a little over the top. If you go a really long time without using the gas engine the car will fire it up to move the fluids and burn the gas before to goes bad.

I'm really intrigued by the Volt, either a buy or temp lease.

I really really want a Diesel Durango but not certain word that will be happening. I don't want to tie myself into a longterm lease or buy right now.

Did find a nicely used '15 Volt, 19k miles. Loaded minus a moon roof. Probably can get it for $13.5k. Not sure what it would drop say a year and 12k miles later. Might be wiser to do a lease transfer for a year.

That's a great deal on the 15' Volt.
