Do You Mountain Bike?

TBF Exterra March 30th, 2008 at Folsom Lake

Anyone interested in doing this?

http://www.tbfracing.com/events/realmtbtri.html

.5-mile swim/ 16-mile mtb bike/ 3.5-mile run

Definitely interested.

I'm trying to put in to perspective how far a 16 mile Mtn bike ride is..? Also, is it gnarly stuff or what? How congested does single track get with that many people doing 2 laps?

One thing I'm a bit boggled by is the transitions from swim, to bike, to run. So you wear a wetsuit with your bicycle shorts under it? Or do you swap out of that in to just some speedo's or what? Someone enlighten me on this! :D

Can anyone recommend a good lake/reservoir to practice swimming in, in the South Bay?

Dogs are like moving obstacles, ask Roxy... doh!!
\

With these two it was more like a slalom course, good thing Tracy didn't eat it.

Holy shit the dogs are fast. I'm bombing down this little downhill run of a quarter mile or so, and they're both right on my tail.

Definitely interested.

a 16 mile ride consiting of two laps would be like riding from my house to Redwood road and back on the Skyline single track twice, or from my house doing the Chabot loop and back.

Anyone know how technical the MTB portion of these events is? The course description merely states:

Bike
The 16-mile mountain bike course is a 2-lap course located entirely within the park on mostly single-track trails around Folsom Lake. The course has a few climbs and descents, nothing technical or with any rocks or major obstacles. All levels of riders will be able to enjoy the course.

but then,

This is a REAL MTB course with something for everyone - sweet twisted single track, open meadow double track, rock gardens, mud pits, climbs, drops, a monster "up to yer hubs" puddle, and two massive sand pits 100' from Transition. Challenging? Yes! Totally XTERRA? Absolutely!

kinda confusing :confused

I'm definitely interested in doing the event.

And so it begins...

I was planning until the New Year to begin training for both a Marathon and a Tri (of some kind; the xterra sounds good!), but I didn't have shit better to do today, so I went for a run. I started with a light run, about 1.2 miles down the way to Campbell community center. 1 light run around the track, followed by 4 laps with progressively faster sprints down the straits. Once that was done, one cool down jog around the track and a mile back home. About 4 miles total. Sprinted the 2nd to last 150 yards or so. Gotta get the lungs ready!!! :D

Good job Ev, just take it easy when you're starting out, it's real easy to hurt yourself when you're just getting started. :thumbup

Here are some pics of me and Tracy on her first real ride :) She's a trooper :love

You will be pumped in no time Ev, just take it easy for a while on the running to let your knees and ankles get used the abuse. Get a heart rate monitor, and start keeping of track of where you are as far as effort vs. HR. The winter is good time to start your base training, just slow long runs and bikes to build your cardio engine for racing in the spring. Same with the swim, just work on getting a good coach, and perfecting your technique. Plenty of time until march xterra to get ready. You will need a tri-specific wetsuit, and yes you wear your bike/run gear under the wetsuit, peel the suit off as you exit the water, slip on your MTB shoes, and grab your bike, and you are ready.
Equip your running shoes with quick laces and they also slip on easy, no tying. Good luck.

I am coming up to the bay area and looking for a MTB ride January 13th and also the 19th, let's get together for a ride, run, or swim.

I'm signing up for the tri.

And mark my words, I'm going under 1' 30"
Here's how it will go:

.5mi swim 8min
16mi bike 55min
3.5mi run 24min
3min of transition time.

Vicious training partner available in the east bay.
I'm a decent swim coach too.

You're gonna do 8 sub 1:00, 100's from a mass start, average 17.5 mph on the mtb for 16 miles, in traffic, and run 6:50 miles for 3.5 miles in traffic? This I gotta see. I'm in for training :p

I'm starting my training tomorrow

I'm going out for a ride or hike and I'm gonna scream "GET THE HELL OUTTA THE WAY" at everyone I see. :laughing

Rockville

It was finally nice enough today to get out and ride :) Rick T. and I made out to Rockville for a good ride. The trail was a little muddy and the rocks were kinda slick but definitely rideable. It was nice to get out there finally after not being on my bike for nearly 3 weeks :(

Anyhoo...here are a few snap shots I took with my camera...

ROCKVILLE!!!!!

I didn't think about there. It's still a little muddy to ride most places around Mt. Diablo.
Anyone want to go sometime midday when it gets sunny?

Hey Bap,
Great insertion:thumbup

Just called Gregory, he's not picking up so he may be riding already. Freaking beautiful in the hills today. You guys wanna ride? I'll call Mikey too.

***EDIT***

Sonny, Roxy and I are meeting at 1:00 p.m. at Skyline Gate and riding a couple of loops of Eastridge/Westridge. Anyone is welcome to meet up with us.

I'm not outta here til 2 today. If you want, I'll give ya a buzz when I'm in the area so we can do a parts swap? I was gonna grab those bar ends at the bike shop on Mountain too, if they're open.
