Can somebody please recommend a MTB rim and hub combination that won't leave me with tweaked (or completely broken) spoke after EVERY ride.

I'm on an XT disc brake hub and mid range Mavic rim right now.

Going on a heavy ass Specialized P1 dirtjumper/converted urban bomber.

Anybody have something they'd like to sell?

TIA!

Michael

I think your problem is one of two things...
1. You're landing heavy from jumps...need to lossen up the arms and legs to absorb the impact instead of transmitting the force to the wheels (takes practice).
or
2. You're wheel is laced improperly. It's possible to have a "true" rim but have the tension all screwed up on the spokes. They should all have the same tension...otherwise the forces will be transmitted to just the tight ones...breaking them. (when a rim is laced properly, the forces are spread through several spokes).

I raced expert downhill for several years using an xt hub with sun ryno lites. I quit racing 2 years ago but I'm still using the same wheels on my bike for recreational riding.

Gotta put my .02 in. Me at kirkwood on 8/24. Pretty kickarse. Going back up on Sunday 8/14. Going to have fun!!!

Will try that--the components I have aren't the best, but shouldn't be giving me busted spokes every ride.

What bikes are you looking at? Have a shortlist?

well started a thread in the 'Sink
http://www.bayarearidersforum.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=131291

since this is more a thread about planning rides.

Looking at a Surly Karate Monkey or GF Rig, both 29" rimmed bikes. Going to be a street bike for awhile as I build up stamina etc.
If you have any input in my thread, let me know.

:cool Thx Kxmike...will go to my lbs and see if they can relace the wheel w/upgraded spokes and kindly ask them to pay attention to the evening out the tension.

It is true--I absolutely abuse my bike. Too bad with all these advances in MTB technology over the years--there still isn't an indestructible, low maintenance, light weight set of wheels for general consumption.

Will work on actively absorbing some the impact too.

:cool

Towards the end of the day, we were all completely flat. At one point, we stopped to catch a breather, when all four of us simultaneously started cramping up.

Despite that little setback, it was an absolutely awesome day! Til next time :)

Your dirt helmet is a little heavier and you'll be hotter in it. There's not much uphill (chairlift will take care of that) at all, but there are some flat areas where you have to pedal a little. Wide tires are good. Unlike motorbikes, the wider tire goes in the front. You'd need at least a 2.25" tire in the back to ride Northstar.

Mike, what time is Sunday's C-Camp ride?

yah ive got 2.35 but have a set of 2.5 or 2.6 i could put on

I think Jeff was suggesting 9:30 at the trailhead. I'm cool with that.

Hey RSRai - I might be at Northstar on Labor Day weekend myself. Have you been there before? What kind of bike will you be on?

As far as tires go, Northstar is pinch-flat central - bring tubes if you're not tubeless! :)

Has anyone heard of "Waste Management" is that a biking group or a hiking group?

this will be my first time at northstar, years ago i did mammoth mountain. i will be on a santa cruz bullit, red. i will be there with my uncle and bro in law. we should try to hook up, i dont know if we are going on friday or saturday yet. the rest of the time we will be camping with the family in tahoe, so have to coordinate with a ton of people with rides and such, but will let you know. If not, look for us, we will be the two indian guys with a white guy. :)

I think we have three of us heading up on Monday for Labor Day. Flyrice, myself, and MassiveAttack. Both Flyrice and M.A. will be on full DH rigs, while I'll be on my "do it all" Jekyll.

Man, I think I did about 40 miles this weekend. It hurts to even think about walking right now...

Hawkgirl, "Waste Management" doesn't ring a bell, sorry...

northstar was pretty fun, but like everyone said, very freakin dusty. It was fun, tried out Karpiel, but that was too insane and ended up walking much of it down. liked flame out, competition, sinuous, tried some others but definately need to go regularly to master some of those trails like karpiel.

Mountain Biking in Maui

Maui is probably best known for it's beaches, clear waters, surf and food. But you don't hear too much about the great trails that are hidden in Maui.

My third trip out there last weekend, I decided to hook up with some locals and ride the trails... suprisingly, there are handful of trails that can be found on west, east and north side.

In the lower middle part there's a volcano about 10,000 feet that has a trail running through the top to bottom through a reserve called Haleakula and PoliPoli-Skyline... *Awesome trails!

On the west side Lahaina area, there are some secret trails, very similiar to China Camp, which I know Crash would love! Rutz Galore! Hitler kind kind of stuff all over the place... *I had to walk down a lot of it:cry Most of the trail however was overgrown and not maintained. Climbing was a bitch - about a 15-25% grade 8-10 miles. :green

And on the North side there are a ton of scenic trails running back into the middle through the mountains to the east and west side. Which are pretty secret as well. Not too much of a climb there...

As the majority of trails here are secret... they're all LEGAL. I had to call and talk to a lot of shops to figure out where these spots were. Luckily some people were nice (most were jerks). Of all the trails, Skyline was the most known.

Maui in general is a beautiful place... if you ever visit... rent a bike and take out one day to ride. It's well worth every feet you climb.

Here are some pics...
