I'd say be real careful doing this and know what you want before you start. We were in the same boat, laid off and paying $2k+/mo for cobra(family of three). When I was laid off at the end of May, I had already made more than the minimum for MediCal, but they ran me through it anyway because my ongoing income was too low through unemployment. And MediCal fucking sucks. You're basically using homeless people services and that shit is way less functional than a taco stand. For days I couldn't even get someone on the phone. Email? Ha. Maybe it's good where you are, but it was terrible here.
I'd have much rather been at the low end of qualifying for CoveredCA plans, something like Kaiser silver was $100/mo or thereabouts for three of us, if you can make it look like you're a low earner but still above MediCal thresholds. If you have a 401k or something like that, it might be worth paying yourself a monthly wage from your 401k so that you disqualify yourself from MediCal. And for what it's worth, we did get MediCal sorted and are now using Kaiser through MediCal and everything is okay, for now, but I'd still way rather be on an actual Kaiser plan through CoveredCA.
There are no instructions for this stuff and nobody's willing to tell you the ins and outs, so just be real careful about the information you submit, because it's locked in cycberspace for a couple of months once you submit it and good luck getting info once you've been kicked into MediCal.
