Sheetiron 300 Dualsport 2017

Alert: I have been informed by the Mendocino National Forest that because of the extremely wet weather we have been having, the following roads in the forest (at a minimum) are closed due to road collapse, huge mudslides, and the like: Goat Mountain Road, M5, and M10. The USFS has been unable to get out and check other roads and trails in the forest, and they do not have the resources to repair the closed roads prior to the dates of the Sheetiron 300 Dualsport event.

The bottom line is that we will definitely not be able to use any routes that go through the Grindstone Ranger District (i.e., the eastern half of the forest). While there is a very small possibility that we could use M1/301/Elk Mountain Road from Bartlett Springs Road to Soda Creek at Lake Pillsbury, it is fairly certain that there would be no access to single track throughout the entire forest for the event.

That means that we would most likely have to bypass the forest entirely, and the dirt sections for the event would consist only of Bartlett Springs Road, Sherwood-Fort Bragg Road, Navarro Ridge Road, and Cow Mountain OHV. So, there would be single-track only through Cow Mountain. My guess is that would not make for a very satisfying route, and if that is what is left to us, I am inclined to cancel the event this year.

Here are partial proposed maps for the best case scenario, but the Saturday route through the forest is very much in doubt. The portion not drawn on these maps is the usual course.

Please let me know what you think. If enough people respond and tell me that they would like to do the event anyway, I will entertain the idea of still holding the event this year. Otherwise, I will make an announcement that the event is canceled for this year.

It is not canceled yet, but it is very likely to be canceled. See my post
above.

It would be sad if this is canceled, hanging out with friends is a big part of the fun no matter the route

While agree that it's about hanging out with and making new friends, the loss of the Mendo Forest section of the event would make it very uninspiring. It's what makes the event special and I would hate for the events image to be diluted. I would think it would be better in the long run to cancel it for one year. Just my opinion.

I figure it would be a fun street bike ride if they do it with the modified route. FJ-09 on the Sheetiron for the win! :party

Despite wanting to ride my new to me XR, I'd take my Duke if it was going to be a pavement bash.

FYI (from March 3):

Hello Volunteers!

It’s been a gorgeous week in Stonyford, but weather is supposed to be moving in on us tomorrow.

Our 3rd Saturday Work Day is coming up on March 18th. We will keep with the tradition of meeting at 10 AM and heading out to remove more trees across the roads and trails.

In addition, we are setting a block of time aside April 27 – May 1, to have a big push to clear trees from the trails. The idea is to get as many folks out here at one time and make a dent in the mess we have. Please mark these dates on your calendar and stay tuned for more information.

Thanks~

Update:

The 2017 Sheetiron 300 Dualsport will be held this year!

Participants this year should be aware of the following:

We will not be going through the Mendocino National Forest. Because of the extremely wet weather we have been having, the following roads in the forest (at a minimum) are closed due to road collapse, huge mudslides, and the like: Goat Mountain Road, M5, M10, and Elk Mountain Road between Lake Pillsbury and Potter Valley. The USFS has been unable to get out and check other roads and trails in the forest, and they and Lake County Public Works do not have the resources to repair the closed roads prior to the dates of the Sheetiron 300 Dualsport event.

There will be limited single track. The dirt sections for the event would consist only of Bartlett Springs Road, Sherwood-Fort Bragg Road, Navarro Ridge Road, Low Gap Road, and Cow Mountain OHV. So, there would be single-track only through Cow Mountain.

Here are partial maps showing the course: (The portion not drawn on these maps is the usual course.)

If the route is mostly fireroads and twisty pavement it'll be like that show Superbikers in the early 80s but with 500 racers hahaha....:wow ....:wtf...:thumbup....:ride

My vote would be to continue on with the annual tradition. Yes, it may be different but for a lot of folks, it doesn't matter.

For those that are not pleased, sitting out 2017 might be the right thing for you. As for me, I have scheduled my vacation and family schedules around this event. I'm full in!

As I mentioned earlier, myself and 4 others have committed with time off, reservations and bike prep since Feb. We would like to see this continue.

Also...will they gripe if I have the turn signals removed on the bike but still have plate, tail light, and head light? I don't want to deal with smashing them on them on the bike.

You will need to have all lighting intact, unless you get luck on inspection. That said, there's nothing saying that you can't remove the turn signals after you pass tech.

I'm just going to drop my entry form in the mail friday before I head up to Stony.. it's okay if it's postmarked on 3/31 right? It won't arrive to them until 4/01 at the soonest.

Correct. It has to arrive on or after April 1. I'm going to bring mine with me and drop it in the mailbox in Stonyford on Friday :)
