Skully P-1 what is your take on it?

Um, it's called marketing. If you don't want it, either don't sign up in the first place. Or hit the "unsubscribe" button. Your email inbox isn't a virgin's vagina.

Maybe I can hit your point, maybe not.

The helmets have been out for a few weeks now. There have been no real world testimony to their performance that an average joe can find on the interwebs and now they want me to spend a thousand dollars on a prototype 'at a special price' on a half-baked product.

Sounds like a good way to get a whole bunch of bad real world testimony from people who will expect more than is being offered.

Skully AR-1 $1,299 Save $200 when you preorder
Estimated delivery May 2015

So, this is $1,500 vapor ware. Rad.

And those first 25 sold out quick. My favorite is the hand signed one for $2k. Guy must think he's some kind of messiah or something. I could see maybe...maybe an iMac selling for double if Jobs signed it. But Marcus Weller Ph.D? Here's three more letter pal...BFD.

Then it doesn't deliver till May. Or pay $25k and get a "prototype" a few months early? Yay. Pay the price of a really nice new bike to beta test some more.

I think I'll wait well past next May and see how things go. I just bought a new helmet anyways.

What a prototype and it's buyer may look like

Aaaand the fact they need 9 months to make 25 helmets.

I am not interested in being a beta tester for $1,500. I could buy a SENA SMH10R and 2 helmets of my choice for $1,500.

That's 10 years of helmet and in helmet communication for the same price.

I know the Skully has lots of other features and while they're nice, they aren't essential to the enjoyment of riding a motorcycle.

I followed the development for a bit. Concept is cool, not sure I NEED it though.

Also, after watching the video on their home page. The founder sounds like a twat. Too much of the "THIS IS THE FUTURE, YOU HAVE TO HAVE THIS, NOTHING WILL BE THE SAME EVER FOR PLANET EARTH!"

I hate how every fundraising campaign does that.

Skully

I've been following the AR1 helmt dev for quite sometime now and quickly became interested. I figured the pricing would be between $1,200 and $1,500 so started saving early.

Personally, I think the whole campaign was handled fairly poorly and even the donation pre-order process is a smudge on the company. However, given the interest in the helmet, how many people have already purchased and the features already available, I pre-ordered one. Hopefully I get my AR1 by mid-May and hopefully its everything we're all expecting and than some!

On that note, yeah, its expensive, but can you honestly say you expected it to be much cheaper? I thought it would possibly be above $1,500, maybe even the $2,000 range. And while there is a small risk pre-orders won't be filled in general, I saved the money specifically for this and lesson will be learned.

If anyone else is thinking about getting one, there is a referral program. I'm making a deal with buds, for any helmets we save money on, we split what is saved. Right now, we need 4 more people, and that should get us around $230 saved on top of the already discounted $100 AR1. Let me know if you're interested!

I didn't expect it to be any cheaper, I really never considered buying the helmet. As I said previously, I think the functionality is great, but not necessary for me. If it were $800-$900, I might consider it.

Not to mention ordering a helmet i've never tried on, isn't my cup of tea. For any wearable items, I prefer to try and buy locally. I tried on 2 dozen helmets before settling on my Arai Signet-Q. While the helmet fits well, it's way too noisy for my tastes. I couldn't imagine buying a $1,500 helmet and have it not fit properly or not be to my liking in general.

Not to mention what else I could do with $1,500.
Week long moto trip while staying in Hotels
2 week moto trip, if not more, camping
New tires and those gold Street Triple R wheels I want
A used dirt bike
Another set of riding gear
100 full tanks of gas

But, as with anything, it's a personal choice and what one wants/values. If someone wants to drop the dough on this helmet, more power to ya! Hope to get to try one on someday.

After talking shit on the founder, and then watching more videos. I kinda want one. Contemplating doing this.

Yeah, hoping it works out as well :). I'm willing to bet the price will go down eventually, or there will be enough features to truely sell most people on it! The open SDK development is truely a smart way to go, just leaves the door open to add additional features!

On that note, I've contacted Skully, trying to see if they will allow a few friends and I to swing by for a few minutes to check out the AR1. They're right around the corner, so I'ma bug them until I get a response :twofinger.

The problem is, people actually raised $55k for that joke kickstarter. Meanwhile, totally legitimate ones die on the vine.

Finally someone who gets it! You want one of these right away, you gotta pay for it. This IS a fairly groundbreaking product. As such, its birth will likely be somewhat painful. It'll be great when the price goes down and any kinks get perfected. Hopefully the folks at Skully will reap the benefits for being the first to try. But who knows, they may fail completely and one of the bigger helmet brands may try to pick up the pieces after that. But if you want it now, you either gotta build it yourself or pay thru the nose for an as yet untested product. No one's forcing anyone to do anything.

Double my income (which would still be pretty low for bay area standards), and I might try it out. But as it is now, I'll need to wait for this kind of tech to become way more commonplace before I get to experience it.

I thought long and hard about it since I am a gadget kind of guy but the more I think the more I don't want anything to do with it. It's a solution looking for a problem that's way above the cost of other options. I tried to be in the beta to see if I could be disproved but apparently they only wanted like 4 guys or something. :dunno

I went down that hype road before with Akuma and their on demand visor tint. The helmet didn't fit my head quiet right and in 2.5 years of ownership the electrochromatic visor never materialized. So really, I had some blinking red lights on the back of my helmet and a map light. Handy, sure but not worth price of admission without what I was really after. I believe it finally did get released but it ended up just being an insert rather than what was promised. Besides, I had already had to pitch that helmet due to a crash.

Just get helmet mounted comms on a helmet you KNOW fits you properly. Or just use headphones if you just want music or GPS prompts. Mount your phone or GPS on the bike or put it in a tank bag. There... I just saved you about $1000 and you get a properly fit helmet out of the deal. :x

I'm with others on the cost. I would consider it if the cost were more in line with other helmets + adding on a chatterbox or whatever. Plus I would need to be able to try it on somewhere or no questions asked return policy. Otherwise, meh. It isn't a racing helmet so the price for me should be in a $600-750 range and I don't see that happening any time soon since it's currently double that.

I think the most promising thing about this helmet would be the hacks people create for it.

In a track setting you could set markers, show lap times and I'm sure some other stuff I've can't even think of.

It would be rad if Skully made the software open source, but I doubt that's going to happen.

I'm fairly certain they're making it open source :teeth.

On the features page they list - "Open SDK - develop your own apps for SKULLY snyapes".

This was a fairly significant selling point for myself as I work in the tech industry and may even try my hand at something simple I could use if someone already hasn't :).

-Note, I'm not a full dev, just mess around from time to time, so please don't see this as a way to test my skill/knowledge/experience :twofinger

I don't care how bad a$$ a helmet is, i am not dropping $1,500 on a lid.. sorry never gonna happen. guess i'll be waiting about 5 more years before i buy one of their vapor-ware lids. Hopefully by then their prices are reasonable.

*edit*

It seems that the People at Skully are deleteing negitive feedback on their Facebook page:

"I am blocked too. I cant comment on postings they make. They do not only delete comments, a whole topic has been deleted today!!!"

and

"I posted a negative review about the price and the way that taking that much money from people without having produced any helmets is ludicrous. You should have capital for your business instead of using customers money to fund your venture. It seems very shady to me that they would delete a comment like that that had more than 100 likes. What are they afraid of. Even Donna the PR person for skully said that is weird and that they welcome discussion on the helmet. Seems to me that someone at skully is trying to hide something or they will bully you by deleting your comments and block you from their page. They are a crock if you ask me"

and

"They are deleting negative comments and criticism from all of their posts. They don't want real feed back. Sad."

For $1500 I'll stick to my mirrors, I was interested in the concept though. I think their market slice is going to be a bit thin.

for $1,500 i could hire a "backpack" to ride with me facing backwards and i can use my headphones for music and GPS
