Adam Schefter: Three teams having early conversations with Giants free-agent WR Mario Manningham: SF, MIA, BUF.

*looks for Eldirty*
buffalo whiffed on meacham, the dolphins just unloaded their #1 wr. dude on ninernation thinks the niners might be saving cap space for a big deal (wallace, not manningham). but an profootball talk guy reports that manningham is coming to santa clara tomorrow.

meanwhile, leonard davis is coming to santa clara. larry allen jr? snyder is strictly a back up, but he does back up 3 to 4 spots. kind of want to keep him on the niner bench. well, he's gone. we're losing all our backups. :laughing

Filed to ESPN: Third team in Manning race that has emerged is 49ers - Manning worked out for Harbaugh & took physical this week

yeah it's reported Harbaugh went to NC on Tuesday to check Manning out.

sfgate says Manning contacted the 49ers, not the other way around

of the 49ers, Broncos, Titans the 49ers are most likely to go to the SB. plus, their top defense and short fields have got to be on Manning's mind if he wants help in not getting potentially paralyzed with another neck injury right away

however I thought I read previously that Manning said he would not consider the NFC on account of his brother

no kidding. those sneaky little devils, how did they get to manning in without anyone knowing? nfl network has been stalking him all week. but they haven't had the 6/7 hour meeting with him in santa clara. so maybe the niners aren't interested? but then why isn't alex signed...

The whole Manning situation has whiffs of him playing the "how can I shake up the entire NFL market" game. His neck isn't going to bode well from the bumpy ride by all those other QBs thrown under his bus (Tebow, Smith, Hass/Locker, and if AZ hadn't come to their senses then Kolb would have been too). I mean, just sign already, LeBron Manning!

C'mon, duder's never been an FA, he's scoping out the market. That's reasonable.

The only reason QBs are getting thrown under the bus is:

A) They suck
B) The media profits off of this shit.

Yeah, I think the odds of us being able to keep him are low. It sucks, but Cruz and Nicks are fucking tits. With Manningham as the #3 guy, you simply couldn't stop the NY passing attack last year if we got ANYTHING going on the ground to spread the defense. I'd love to keep that, but I know it's a longshot, because NY DOES NOT offer up the big money for Free Agents. That's how we lost Boss and Smith last year, and I expect that Manningham will get the same treatment. We'll offer him and mediocre WR contract that is a fair reflection of his talent level and tell him to take it or leave it, because we intend to win with or without him. I doubted it last year and the Giants once again proved me a fool for doubting when we lost Boss and Smith. This time, I'm all thumbs up. If the Mara family says we don't need to spend that much money and let Manningham go, I trust they're right. If I was the Redskins, I'd sell my soul to get him so RG3 will have someone to throw to that isn't 700 years old.

I predict if Manningham does leave the Giants, Dominik Hixon will blow the fuck up next year.

Smith worked out for Miami.

I really wish the Niners had just ignored Manning. I think he'll end up finishing the season on the IR, ruining our cap structure and forcing Kaepernick to start at least 4 games, maybe 8+. The only way SF can justify the Manning risk is to get a heavily incentive laden contract for 4 years or less.

With Manning and Kaep we have no idea what we're really gonna get. We do with Smith. This is a bad roll of the dice imho. :|

Disagree. Please review Smith's career as a whole. I've bitched for a while that dude is the second coming of Kerry Collins. A guy so good you don't want to cut him but so bad you hate to keep him. That sort of inconsistent play can haunt a team for YEARS, much as Smith has for the Niners and Collins did for the Giants. That's the problem with a dude like that. You can't really build a team around him because you NEVER know what you're really going to get. Maybe Smith is over the hump and will be solid now, but he has had a lot of up and down years that make me think he deserves to be trusted as an all year solid game manager.

Basically what Eldirty said.

The New Orleans playoff game aside, Smith basically isn't the type who is going to win games for you. He never has been. He's had a ton of shit talked on him for not living up to #1 overall expectations, but he gets tons of credit for sticking around as long as he has and putting up with as much shit as he has.. from injury to surgery to revolving OCs to being benched for JT Osullivan (my gawd Mike Martz is an idiot) or Shaun Hill.

Oh, and he declined a 3/24M contract offered by the Niners last week so, it's not like he's being tossed aside. Good for him if he explores other options.

Looks like Alex is seriously looking for other suitors. It would be funny if SF is left without both Alex and Peyton.
:blah :blah :blah

if alex signs with the dolphins and manning signs with one of the other two teams, they will replace alex. hasselbeck probably regrets not signing with the niners last season when he had a chance. manning goes to tennessee, hasselbeck comes here: unless he doesn't want to win a super bowl before he retires. the broncos are more of a problem because manning going there doesn't free anyone up who is worth a shit. niners sign josh johnson and have him and kaepernick battle for qb1.

you ninerhaters need to realize that the stupid incompetent years of niner mismanagement are over, they have a plan they know their sit. you haters had a nice little run, but it's over.
