What did you do to your dirty bike today?

:laughing
No biggie. I was planning on doing the chain conversion anyway. Now I have to.

Before the belt broke I was having an absolute blast. The bike handled the Metcalf black diamond single track trails with ease.

I'm not a professional mechanic, but I think I found the issue:

But hey, you could play one on TV...

Next week perhaps we can compare riding the Zero to riding the Alta.

I love the idea. As someone who has ridden both, I will say that the Alta is considerably better in a few areas. I think of the Zero as the poor man's Alta. :laughing

When I rode the Zero on Fingers, Snake etcetera, i was smiling bigly.

BIGLY. Now I do it on the Alta routinely. Still smiling. Today was horseshoe, grewsome gary, snake, valley view, big creek, big manzinata, fingers... nine miles, 38 minutes.

Repeat. Wasn't in the mood for the rocks on Serpentine etcetera,

I did Snake this morning and it was a blast on the Zero. Smiles confirmed, bigly.

Pulled the trigger on a GYTR flywheel weight for the 05 YZ250. Initial riding in the back yard feels good. A lot less tire spin right out of the gate. Can't wait to get it to the mountains.

And updating the tire to the Michelin Starcross Medium. Will be the first Starcross 5 I have tried. We will see how it performs.

I spooned some knobbies onto my new-to-me 2015 Zero FX yesterday. This morning I took it to Metcalf to see what kind of real world trail riding range I could expect.

As it turns out, the range today was 5 miles.

I still had lots of juice left in the battery, but I managed to snap the belt. I went over a small jump and was just hitting the throttle as I landed when it broke. I guess I know why Zero recommends doing the chain conversion for offroad riding. :laughing

On the plus side, I did get a pretty good workout pushing the bike back to the parking lot. :laughing

Hey Aaron, congrats.
First I heard ya got a Zero.
I rode the 2014 DS & FX at Metcalf before they were sent to dealers.
The FX was a lot more fun there than the DS.

The LAPD snapped a few belts while testing the FX'es.
Usually from jumping onto hardpack with throttle on (wheel spinning up).
We did switch them to chains but they are a bit noisier.
One customer in the pacific NW hated the noise of the chain so much he just ordered a bunch of belts.

Anyway, have fun with your FX!
Lemme know if you have any questions or issues as I did work on them for awhile while there.

Installed a newly repaired pipe. I used Pacific Crest Pipe Repair and they did an excellent job. Looks just about brand new. All the dents have magically disappeared and it fits perfect.
Also repacked the silencer; one of my least favorite tasks.

Replaced my 450's rusty footpegs with some new Tusk pegs.

Also put a grip donut on the 450 because of the dual sport switch housing being painful.

Got a new dirty bike to learn how to ride other dirty bikes better. And probably to compete with.

Removed the headlight, tail light, light switch and cosmetic piece opposite the light switch. Applied dielectric grease to a bunch of connections. Took apart the Dell'orto carb to record the settings and moved the needle clip one position leaner.

I found an unused connector going to the CDI which I think is for the dual-map switch on the Pro model. I'll bet my ignition has the maps and all I need is the switch.

Speaking of switches, I took off the kill switch to apply dielectric grease and found it totally sealed. Sweet.

Yes. Way cheaper than Lewisport's quote, even with sales tax from CMS, without sales tax from Lewisport. I was waffling on buying a new TRS but I just can't see me putting it to use. I also tried to see a used a TRS and that was weird.... person wouldn't tell me where in the country it was.

CMS is much larger operation than I expected. Lots of stock. They seem to have some capital behind them. Unfortunately, no stock of Gas Gas TXT air filters or jets. :( It's obvious that I will have to get parts from one of the trials specialists.

Shit's gonna get real at Moonrocks. Until I run out of gas.

Nice! Tomorrow i am take two noobs to Metcalf. I have three green sticker dirtbikes, so we are gonna gear up the dudes and see how they do. I'll try to tale pics.

:thumbup

Have you checked and or tried retarding the ignition yet? A lot of folks have found their YZ's actual stator set to avanced from stock accentuating the hit. I retarded my 02 and it really helped smoothing out the power, more than the flywheel weight even. The combo has my smoker chugging like a tractor. Hooks up with very little spin unless I get ham fisted. :ride

I've been having good luck ordering trials bits from England this year for stuff I can't find/get/available in the US of A. A lot of online trials retailers there, much more stock, and low prices due to the drop of the British Pound even when adding in shipping.

Gave the bike a bath, adjust the valves, fixed the clutch lever. When I dropped he bike trying to go up Trail 1 I think I knocked some air into the plunger (the reservoir wasn't filled properly initially) and I lost most of the clutch control. Scary! Threw a new spark plug in early--it's $3 and the last one was nearing "replacement" time. Will clear air filter again soon even though it only has 5 hours on it--it was dusty riding and I like going out for the weekend with the bike entirely fresh and ready.

Back to riding like new. Awaiting for next weekends ride up in the hills somewhere.

Wow just seeing this! Congrats!!

On the little bike from Girona:

Adjusted the shift lever lower
Adjusted the clutch lever position and engagement
Test rode it in my driveway
Added a little trans oil, spilled more; that filler hole is way too small and at a difficult angle
Tried and failed to remove melted pants from the pipe
Removed the rear tire and prepped the rim for Tubliss

With just 3.8 hours at 5 psi, the MT-43 center knobs had shallow scallops out of them. Now I feel good about spending the money on Dunlops and Tubliss.

Oh yeah, there was a Chinese tube in the tire.

Had a little time this morning and decided to prep for the chain conversion. Interestingly, this bike requires removal of the swingarm for installation of the countershaft sprocket. While I was at it, I figured I may as well yank the forks and shock off and take them to JPH to have them resprung.

Next week, I should have a much improved little electric dualsport.
